Remove Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) From Life!

Remove Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) From Life!

What is FOMO?
Everyone especially the youth today is talking & complaining about FOMO. When people think that they would be happier at some other place than where they currently are, they suffer from FOMO. The better place may be better in terms of events, people or simply personal liking. People may want to be with their friends instead of staying at home because they think that their friends are more fun than their family. Similarly, people may be having fun at their actual place but the fact that they think some other place to be more happening, they may experience FOMO. So, FOMO may be an absolute or a relative feeling.

FOMO has already been accepted as a part of our society, existence and our daily lives. This is further increasing the dissatisfaction, frustration, stress & disappointment in the society. People fear missing out on things elsewhere which makes them spoil the time they have in the present, preventing them from enjoying what they have and where they are in this moment. The problem is that by accepting FOMO as a part of our daily lives, we are further strengthening our acceptance of fear within us and in the society in general. Instead of finding a way out of FOMO, we are giving strength to fear and inviting a new issue into our lives in the form of FOMO.
Remove Fear From Life!
Let’s first address fear briefly to try and remove it from our lives. This is important because if we can remove fear from our minds, many of the problems including FOMO will be wiped out of our lives, hence making it more suitable and peaceful.
So, let’s see why we have held onto fear and how to remove it. We are fearful mainly due to 2 broad reasons – The fear of losing out something/someone dear to us OR The fear of not being able to achieve something/someone we want in our lives.
We will address fear separately in another blog. Here, I will give a brief and concise solution to fear as the blog is more about FOMO. To put it very broadly, Our biggest fear in life is that of death. If we can go past this fear, we will go past every fear. This is because if we don’t exist, there won’t be any fear as such. So, removal of the fear of death will remove all our fears.
How do we do this? Take more calculated risks in life. Adventure sports is a great way to do this. Try mountaineering, traveling, bungee jumping, scuba-diving and various other adventure sports which will make us more open and fearless in our approach in life. Once the fear of death is gone owing to the exposure given by adventure sports, we will notice that every other fear has melted away from our life. When we are facing risks to our life in the present, can we fear about anything else in the current moment? And once this risk is over, we would realize the futility of all other fears and would let them go!

So, if all fears go away from our life, FOMO would also be wiped out. This was the way to remove FOMO from its base. But till this happens we also need to know the other ways of managing, controlling and minimizing FOMO. So now, let’s address the fear of missing out in its length & breadth.
How To Tackle FOMO
Talking about FOMO, we cannot miss something that we don’t like. We cannot miss being in a traffic jam, right? So, when we talk about FOMO, it is concerned about something good. Something we really like and are sad about missing out on. We might be missing our friends who went to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. Similarly, we may  miss our home when we are away from it for some official work. Let’s see how to tackle FOMO situations like these.
Be Where Your Heart is! ( Case 1)
The next question that raises itself here is whether we feel our actual place to be good or is it a bad one for us in our minds. It is possible that we like where we are currently but we like some other place more than our actual place. In this case, we should just go to the place we like more. This is because it is increasing our happiness. Happiness should never be compromised upon as it is what we live for. It’s a brief life that we have and we should do every possible thing to always keep ourselves happy.
But this doesn’t mean that in the name of happiness we start doing freaky things. We shouldn’t long to be with our friends just because they had planned to get drunk tonight. Before moving to the place of our liking, we should think whether it really makes us happy or is it just a compulsive need of ours. We need to be wise & responsible before we start choosing what is good for us.
But if it’s because of an official tour that we are missing home, we have many options to counter FOMO in this case. If these trips are not very frequent then it should not bother us as some distance is good even from the things we love the most. These distances remind us of the value of the things we like and increases our love for them further.
But if these official trips are too frequent and they keep us away from our loved ones too much for too long, we should decide. We need to choose between this job and our family. In most of the cases, family would come first as it should be. We need to find ourselves a more peaceful job which would keep us close & around our family. Running after money by neglecting the people we love is no wise decision. People are the most important assets in our life. Money won’t give us any consolation when our loved ones are gone. The best thing in this case would be to start our own little business. These days there are plenty of options that lets us work from home. Technology, digitalization and social media are great tools to sit at home and start your own work. So, if we really like doing something, we should give it expression on social media to give meaning to our life and importance to our loved ones simultaneously!

Set Your Surroundings Right! (Case 2)
The second case under FOMO is where we don’t like our actual place and we want to reach some other place that we feel we are missing out on. This is like chasing a mirage. If we don’t like where we are right now and think that by reaching some new place we will be better-off, we are badly mistaken. This is because the boredom that is killing us is within us and not in our actual place. We may take a trip of the world but we won’t feel good anywhere without making ourself feel good right where we are right now!
We may think that we don’t like our home and going to our friend’s house would be a better idea. But the reality is that we are running away from our situations. We may go to our friend’s house but we know that we can’t stay there forever. And even if we stay there for a long time, we will start getting bored of it after a point. So, when we just want to run away to a new place from our actual place, the first decision to make is to stand our ground firmly & think what is missing in this place for us.
It might be the case that we are not on very good terms with our family members. Try to sort things out with them. Only when we do this will the place become a better one for us. Happiness is in our hands and in this very moment. If we keep on running from situations, we are unknowingly running away from ourself and from our happiness.

Now, suppose these family matters are also all sorted out and we are feeling better than before. But after a few days, we again start having the same old feeling. We still feel like running away to some other place. Now, the thing that we need to understand is that we have made our outer situations better which has improved our life. But there is one direction we have still not looked into – Inwards.
Organize Your Inner World! (Case 3)
Our outer situations and relations may become healthy and progressive but unless our inner world falls in order, our outer world won’t be all good. We may feel fearful, empty, sad, stressed, angry, anxious, under-confident, frustrated, depressed and many more of such negative emotions. And because of all these feelings within us, we might feel like running away to a ‘better’ place. But when the issue is within us, a newer place would be at least another lifetime away. So, instead of trying to run away somewhere, we need to address our inner conflicts in the form of negative emotions.
What we need to do is to address our fears, our concerns and our frustrations. Everything that makes us feel bad and incomplete needs to be analyzed and resolved. These issues are explained in detail in the following blogs:

Benefits of A Better Inner Experience
After reading all these blogs we would get to know that why we should stop identifying with our material belongings including our body & mind and how we should start letting ourself get identified with just the Life within us! We would come to know that being alive is the greatest joy and all our material possessions are keeping us away from living our best possible life. When we are able to apply the things that are talked about in these blogs, we will know how to start enjoying our own existence. We would love being where we are without feeling the need to run away somewhere else to get our share of happiness.
It is aptly said that the whole Universe resides within us. When we remove all the negative emotions or let’s say when we transform them into positive emotions within us, we merge with our inner creator and the universe. And when we are able to feel the joy of this creation & this universe simultaneously and that too, right where we are, will we ever long to go to another place? Every place we can think of would be a part of our consciousness as it is a part of this universe. So, we would become able to sit peacefully wherever we are and enjoy the very existence of the universe as our own existence! For us, there won’t remain any difference among various places in the universe. We will be able to enjoy any place we want to in the universe by sitting where we are. This is the magic of being conscious.
See, we are able to experience this moment only because we are conscious right now. If we were not conscious, we won’t know anything about the place we are in right now. But consciousness is a whole. Either we are conscious in this moment or we are not. If we are, we can experience any place in this universe as we are experiencing where we are right now physically. So, when we can get the experience of any place we want by sitting here, why would we have FOMO? We cannot miss out anything as everything is in our consciousness.
This means that once we organize your inner world, we would experience bliss within ourself which will end the urge to go to a better place because there is no better place anymore. But if we want to experience another place, we can do that sitting here as we have activated our consciousness! FOMO has been wiped out and we are ready to live a life without fear or the fear of missing out!

Don’t Accept Fear or FOMO!
We should not accept FOMO as a given problem that we can’t overcome. It is an issue created by us and we can easily make amends. We should first try to remove fear itself from our system. Other Subtler ways to remove FOMO is by addressing our outer (surrounding) and inner conflicts. Once, these are set right, we will not only become able to wipe out FOMO from our daily lives but we will also be able to live the life of our dreams that will be full of peace, happiness & success!
