Pressure in Daily Life
You must have heard people talking about how much pressure they face in their lives. You yourself must have felt pressure while trying to fulfill various personal & professional commitments. The stressful modern lifestyle is nothing but too much pressure. Pressure to survive in an environment with ever-increasing competition, pressure to stay afloat and hold onto what we have achieved in life or the pressure to achieve perfection and give our best performance every time we do something. Most of us crumble under this heavy burden of pressure. We either stop trying due to the fear of failure or choose to stay in our comfort zone so as to avoid pressure. What is the right approach to handle pressure in life? Lets begin by understanding the nitty-gritty of pressure and what it is all about.
The Basics of Pressure
The Basics of Pressure
Pressure is basically the absence of freedom from the result of an activity you are doing. This means that when we do something, we are constantly under the scanner to do the job in a particular way and/or towards a certain pre-determined target. There is no way out and you feel a suffocating compulsion to ‘deliver the goods’. This pressure may be self-imposed or it may be exerted from an outside influence like your boss, your parents or your friends/colleagues. The world will always put pressure on you to mould you as per its agendas, needs & preferences. We cannot help that. But we can choose to act in our own unique way which is easy, soothing and apt for our own well-being. We should never put pressure on ourself no matter what the world tries to push us towards.
Understanding Pressure & Its Repercussions
Understanding Pressure And its Repercussions
Many people under external pressure lose their natural talent and skill or mould themselves to fulfill aspirations of other people. In both these cases we will be at a big loss as we will lose our uniqueness of doing things. It doesn’t matter whether we perform well or worse under pressure. The very fact that we are feeling the pressure and are using it to accomplish tasks is the worst possible situation for us and we need to work on that aspect before working on anything else. When the beginning of something is not good, its result doesn’t matter. So, if we start something and accomplish it by using pressure as a fuel, even if we perform well, it’s our loss because it has altered us and our natural approach towards doing things forever. Every future endeavor will take us further & further away from our true-self as we will try to use pressure to perform well.
Therefore, we should neither try to avoid pressure nor shall we try to use it as a fuel to perform well. What we need to do is to do things out of their genuineness and out of love & need instead of fear or greed to do well. We will look at this aspect in greater detail in the coming paragraphs but let’s first analyze why pressure has become an undetachable part of human life.
Cause of Origin : Is Pressure Natural or Created?
Cause And Origin of Pressure
We saw earlier that pressure is given to us by external factors and the various important people in our lives. Why do they pressurize us? Do they themselves are under pressure which they try to pass on to us or they are habitual of pressurizing others? The answer is somewhere in between. Nobody likes to trouble others by putting pressure on them but when they need to get something done for themselves or for someone above them, they use pressure as a catalyst.
Pressure Serves An Important Purpose
Pressure Serves An Important Purpose
The fault is not entirely theirs. Actually, human-beings are lazy creatures and we don’t generally do something until we really feel the need to do it. Being ‘lazy’ is not used here in a negative sense and laziness is not at all a bad thing. We leave the topic of laziness to another blog another day. But the point to be noted here is that people don’t do things until they are pushed hard towards them. So, it can be said that pressure is natural and a good thing for us as it helps us see the need to do important things. It reminds us of our priorities at the right time. But this is the only utility of pressure in our life.
Using pressure beyond this point would hamper our natural abilities, instincts and response to everything in life. The question is how do we eliminate this negative role of pressure from our lives? How do we handle pressure well? And how do we learn to do things freely without even an iota of pressure or compulsion in our minds?
Using Pressure To Our Benefit
Using Pressure To Our Benefit
We just saw and realized that pressure is inbuilt in Nature. It’s not your boss or your parents or your spouse or sibling who pressurizes you into doing certain things. It’s a natural phenomena that is manifested in human thoughts, emotions and actions. Don’t we feel pressure to protect ourself when there is a natural calamity like an earthquake or a flood? So, pressure is a natural instinct in humans.
But this doesn’t mean that we have to succumb to pressure. We neither have to resist Nature nor we have to become slaves to it. We have to learn to use it to our benefit. And to use anything that is out of your control to your benefit, you have to become still! Many yogis and meditators have realized, accepted and propagated that the only way to use your mind to the best of your ability is to attain stillness of mind & body. Pressure also happens only in our mind and as its consequence in our body, although in response to a real event. We cannot control the external, real & physical event but we can definitely control our intangible thoughts. When we become still even when faced with extreme pressure situations, we become equipped to absorb all the pressure which then transforms into positive energy within us. And then we can easily use this energy in a way that simultaneously protects our uniqueness of action and simultaneously benefits us.
Practice Stillness of Mind & Body
Remember that our hasty reaction to pressure is panic, but our stillness when faced with a pressure situation is wisdom and our perfect response to the situation! Thus, Stillness should be practiced in life so that we are able to absorb pressure and turn it into something advantageous for ourself and for the mankind in general!
We shouldn’t give-up when faced with pressure situations nor shall we try to use it as a fuel to achieve something out of it. The perfect response to pressure is to first realize that it is a natural human instinct and then reduce it to its minimum by becoming absolutely still so as to optimize it to a point where it becomes suitable to be used for our benefit!
